Book Description
In the aftermath of the Lebanese civil war, many people were left with desabilities and in need of medical help and social support. Yet closer analysis showed that there were within the society, others with long-standing disability, especially arising on childhood, that had more long-lasting social impacts. Society-in their education, social lives, employment, financial position, and housing-is necessary in order to develop policies to reduce inequalities in the future. As society heals and rebuilds itself, disadvantage and inequalities will become an increasing policy issue. This book provides important insights into the causal pathways of disability-related disadvantage and a point for reflection on options for the future.
In this bood< the concept of psychosocial disadvantage as related to disbility is introduced and efforts at its assessment are reviesed. Drawing on data from social epidemiological studies at both national and local level, studies in this book describe how disability and disadvantage interact in the lives of people with disability in Lebanon, a society where traditional and modern values overlap. The concluding chapter brings together the conceptual issues that emerged from these studies, summarizes the man findings, and answers the essential question of whether there is live after disability.
