يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تزويد القارئ بمعلومات متخصصة تساعده على فهم طبيعة الإعاقة السمعية والتحديات المعاصرة في التقييم والتأهيل السمعي، كما يزود القارئ بمعلومات معاصرة حول تأثير الإعاقة السمعية على جوانب النمو المختلفة والحاجات الارشادية للأشخاص المعاقين سمعياً وأسرهم، هذا بالإضافة إلى أنه يناقش فلسفة تربية وتعليم الأشخاص المعاقين سمعياً والتحديات المعاصرة التي تواجه تعليمهم، إن هذا الكتاب يتضمن أشكالاً توضيحية تساعد على فهم طبيعة الإعاقة السمعية، كما و يقدم ارشادات عملية لكل من المختصين والآباء والمعلمين والمعاقين سمعياً. لذلك فقد تناولت الفصول من الأول إلى الرابع طبيعة السمع والجهاز العصبي السمعي ثم طبيعة الإعاقة السمعية وتطور السمع والتدخل المبكر ودور الآباء ثم التقييم السمعي، والفصول من الخامس إلى الثامن تناولت تقييم الأشخاص والتأهيل السمعي وبرامج مرحلة ما قبل المدرسة وطرق واسترتيجيات التواصل، ومن الفصل التاسع إلى الثاني عشر فقد تناولت ارشاد أسر الاشخاص المعاقين سمعياً وتلبية حاجات الأشخاص المعاقين سمعيا وتربيتهم، ودور أخصائيي علم السمع التربوي ودمج الطلبة المعاقين سمعيا. وأخيرا تحدث الكتاب عن الصم المكفوفين، حيث عرّف الأصم المكفوف وخصائص الصم المكفوفين والتعلم والتواصل والأسباب والوقاية، ثم الإرشادات المقترحة للتعامل مع الصم المكفوفين .
