كنت طفلاً عندما وجدت نفسي بين أحياء دمشق القديمة، كان ثمة هدوء خاص ورائحة تمتلكها - دون معاناة - ما تزال في ذاكرتي أشعر بذلك الإنتقال المفاجئ من الصخب الذي يعوم عند جسر فيكترويا والعرجة، إلى أحياء ساروجة حيث يغرق الهدوء والصمت بين جدرانها وتعيق الرطوبة الممتعة في ظل الظهيرة، كان إنقلاباً طقسياً بين مكانٍ وآخرٌ، كان لها - أي دمشق - روحٌ خاصة.
مرة أخرى وجدت نفسي في دمشق عندما أصبحت شاباً لكن في مكانٍ آخر، وظلت عندي تلك الحاسة الخاصة بالدهشة تجاه دمشق.
