يُشير المؤرخ السويسري (هنري ستيرلين) إلى مسيرة حضارات، يدعوها بمعجزة التراث الإنسانيّ فيقول: "من ينابيع دجلة والفرات نهلت الحضارة الغربية ثقافتها، فعلى ضفافهما ابتدع السومريون الخط والموسيقى، والبابليون القانون والفلك والرياضيات، وبرع الأشوريون في فنون النحت وصياغة الحلي"، تلك هي شهادة ميلاد هذه البلاد وأهلها.
هذه البلاد التي تواطئوا عليها فتعرضت لإبادة منظمة لذاكرتها وعناصر هويتها الثقافية، فمن نهب مواثل ومأثورات الحضارة السومرية في أثناء الحصار التسعيني، وصولاً إلى كارثة نهب متحف العراق الوطني، إثر الإحتلال الأمريكي، تلتها إقامة معسكرات لقوات الغزو بين مواقع العراق الأثرية في أور وبابل ونمرود ثم اكتملت الكارثة بدخول الإرهاب الداعشي إلى مدن محافظة نينوى وما جاورها، وتبنيه منهجاً مقصوداً لتدمير منجزات الحضارة العراقية القديمة وشواخصها منذ العصور الآشورية مروراً بمدينة الشمس (الحضر) ووصولاً إلى المواقع الدينية من جوامع وكنائس ومراقد ومعابد لمختلف الديانات والطوائف والأعراق التي تشكل فسيفساء العراق الإثني والثقافي.
هذا الكتاب محاولة لإحصاء خسائر كارثةٍ حلت وتحذير من أخرى قادمة، كما نبه إليها البروفسور (جيل شتاين) مدير المعهد الشرقي بشيكاغو في تقديمه لمعرض وكتاب "الكارثة"، إذ تركزت تحذيراته على إستمرار التراخي في حراسة المواقع الأثرية وحمايتها، وتفاقُم عمليات النبش والسرقة وتسهيل التهريب إلى خارج العراق لتنتهي تلك النفائس ما بين خزائن المقتنين الأثرياء وبين صالات العرض للمزادات والمتاحف والجامعات في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها، خلافاً للتشريعات الدولية التي تحرم الإتجار بالإرث الثقافي العراقي.
لا بدّ من الإعتراف أخيراً، بأن ما حصل لم يكن مجرد سرقات ونهب عشوائي لمواقع أثرية ومتاحف، وإنما كان تدميراً مبرمجاً يستهدف جذور العمق الحضاري الذي تفرد به العراق تاريخياً، ليسهل محو ذاكرته وبتفتيت هوية أبنائه وتهشيم صورته المستقبلية.
