شغل موضوع الدين عقول الفلاسفة منذ بدايات التصورات الميتافيزيقية داخل الفلسفة نفسها، واجتماعها في الرؤية الدينية خارج الفلسفة. وفي كلا الحالين كانت هنالك مشتركات بحث، بدأت بالتراجع اليوم لتتحول بوصفها ندية وتقابل، وهذه النتيجة لم تكن بتلك السرعة الزمنية أو الانسيابية، بل كانت نتاجاً لمخاض كبير من الحروب والتكفير والوان من الاتهام للفيلسوف بأنه يغادر منطقته المسموحة حينما يلج حدود الدين، حتى أن بعض الفلاسفة قد انساقوا لخلق حد وسط بين الطرفين، وذلك عن طريق المزاوجة أو القول تجنياً إن التصورات واحدة! وجاءت هذه التجارب مزامنة للعصور الوسطى المسيحية منها والإسلامية، فقد عمل الكثير من الفلاسفة وقتها على تبيان أن ما لدى الشريعة والإيمان ليس بمخالف للعقل والتفلسف! والأمثلة على ذلك كثيرة يمكن ملاحظة أوجها مع ابن رشد إسلامياً وأوغسطين الأكويني مسيحياً، لكن ذلك لا ينكر وجود فلاسفة آخرين عدوا أن للفلسفة قواماً مستقلاً ناقماً وناقماً في بعض الأحيان من الدين، كما عند الرازي، وسيجر، وآخرين، كثر في تلك الحقبة.
يعمل هذا النص المترجم "فلسفة الدين" للكاتب مارتن. و. ف. ستون على تسليط الضوء على أهم موضوعات وقضايا فلسفة الدين مثل البرهنة على وجود الاله، ومشكلة اللاهوت وعلاقته بفلسفة الدين، ومسألة المعرفة الدينية، ولعل النص من الأهمية في سياقنا الزماني والمكاني مما استجلب معه أهمية الخوض في ترجمته كمبادرة فذة من المترجم الأستاذ سهيل نجم، الذي كان رشيق العبارة وواضحها، في التعريب والترجمة.
