لطالما استهوى الفلسفة سؤال: لماذا نحيا؟... وإذا كان الجواب أن الحياة من دون معنى، أو عبثية، فلأنّ حجم ما في هذا الوجود من شرٍّ ومن ألمٍ ليس في متناول الفهم، ولأن من يُصدر هذا الحكم يرفض الإعتراف بأنّ لها معنى دينياً.
لقد فُهمت الفلسفة والدين بوصفهما طريقين يقودان إلى سعادة النفس الإنسانية.
وُجِد الدِّين قبل ظهور الفلسفة، وتصوّر مسبقاً تقريباً كلّ موضوعاتها ومعنى بحثها عن الحكمة، فالفلسفة، من حيث إنّها لا تتنكر لعلاقة النسب التي تربطها بالدّين، تقدّم نفسها بوصفها معرفةً عقلانيةً وحجاجيةً.
تكمن مزية المفكرين المسلمين في إلحاحهم على إستقلالية الدّين والفلسفة، لكنّ الوحي، نتيجة لذلك، أضحى يبدو حكمة خاصّة ومشروطة تاريخياً.
في حين أنّ الكونية، التي من المؤكّد أنّ الديانات الكبرى فكرت فيها، أصبحت خاصيّة للفلسفة؛ ومنذئذٍ ستفرض المعرفة العقلانية والعلمية نفسها باعتبارها المعرفة الوحيدة الممكنة والمقبولة.
وستقود هذه الهيمنة مع الحداثة المتقدّمة إلى نقد جذري للدين، ولكن سيبقى من البداهة الأولى بالنسبة إلى الدّين أنّ العالم مليء بالمعنى.
