يعد لسان العرب من أشملِ معاجم اللغة العربية وأكبرها، ويعتبر أضخمَ موسوعة لغوية وأدبية؛ لغزارة مادته العلمية، ولاستقصائه واستيعابه جُلَّ مفردات اللغة العربية، وهو من أغنى المعاجم بالشواهد.
ولقد جمع مؤلِّفُه ابنُ منظور (ت: 711هـ) مادّتَه لهذا الكتاب من خمسة مصادر هي: تهذيب اللغة للأزهري، المحكم والمحيط الأعظم لابن سيده، تاج اللغة وصحاح العربية للجوهري، حواشي ابن بري على صحاح الجوهري، النهاية في غريب الحديث والأثر لعز الدين ابن الأثير.
يحوي هذا المعجم 80 ألف مادة، (بزيادة 20 ألف مادة على القاموس المحيط) وهو جيد الضبط ويعرض الروايات المتعارضة ويرجح الأقوال فيها. ويذكر المعجم ما اشتق من اللفظ من أسماء القبائل والأشخاص والأماكن وغيرها.
أراد ابن منظور بكتابه أن يجمع بين صفتين: الاستقصاء والترتيب؛ إذ كانت المعاجم السابقة – كما يقول هو – تعنى بأحد هذين الأمرين دون الآخر، وأخذ على نفسه أن يأخذ ما في مصادره الخمسة بنصه دون خروج عليه، واعتبر هذا جهده الوحيد في الكتاب، وتبرأ من تبعة أية أخطاء محتملة بأن ما قد يقع في الكتاب من خطأ هو من الأصول، وإن تصرف قليلا في النهاية فغير شيئاً من ترتيبها.
