تتناول هذه الدراسة موقف مصر من قضايا إمارات الخليج العربية للمدة 1952 – 1970 ، وما دعاني إلى اختيار هذه المرحلةهو كونها تمثل انعطافة جديدة في توجهات مصر الخارجية تجاه منطقة الخليج العربي ، ففي تموز عام 1952 شهدت القاهرة انقلاباً عسكرياً ضد الحكم الملكي قام به تنظيم الضباط الأحرار في الجيش المصري ، الذي يحمل توجهات تدعو إلى القومية العربية وإلى الوحدة العربية وفي المقابل كانت منطقة الخليج العربي تعيش تحركاً قوياً لانتشار أفكار القومية العربية بين أبناءها مما أوجد ترابطاً فكرياً بين الجانبين، وأما اختيار عام 1970 نهاية للمرحلة ؛ لأنه مثل نهاية للمد القومي المصري ، ولاسيما بعد وفاة الرئيس جمال عبد الناصر . في حين كانت منطقة الخليج العربي على موعد مع بداية النهاية لعهد الاستعمار ، لذا ارتأيت أن أخوض في إبراز الموقف المصري تجاه إمارات الخليج العربية وذلك لندرة ما كتب عن هذه المنطقة في تعاملها مع الجانب المصري.
لقد عمدت إلى استثناءالعراق والمملكة العربية السعودية من بين الدول الخليج العربية خلال مدة الدراسة ، ولعل ذلك متأتياً من تمسكي بعنوان الدراسة الرئيس وهو "إمارات الخليج العربية " فقط دون دولهِ ، كما أن الإمارات كانت خاضعة للاستعمار البريطاني المباشر ولم تكن تتمتع بأية صفة سياسية دولية ، على العكس من النظامين العراقي والسعودي اللذين كانا قد نالا استقلاليهما قبل مدة الدراسة ، بل أن هاتين الدولتين قد سعتا إلى مد نفوذهما إلى جنب أو بالضد من النظام المصري طيلة مدة البحث ، فضلاً عن ذلك فأن هناك كثير من الدراسات الأكاديمية التي تناولت موضوع العلاقات السياسية بين مصر وكلا هذين البلدين أو على إنفراد ، مما يجعل الخوض فيها موضوعاً غير ذي جدوى ، كما حاولت تسليط الضوء قدر الإمكان على الصراع المصري – البريطاني في إمارات الخليج العربية وقضاياها المختلفة ، ولذلك ركزت في بحثي على إبراز الموقف المصري على الساحتين العربية والدولية ، فتارة أخذت موقفها في الجامعة العربية ، وتارة أخرى بحثت موقفها في الأمم المتحدة وكذلك أظهرت الموقف السياسي والعسكري والرأي العام المصري .
