جاءت نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية تحمل معها مصير العديد من الدول الصغرى، التي كانت أقل من أن تشارك في تحديد مستقبلها لتكون خاضعة لدول أكبر طبقًا لسياسة هذه الدول وأهدافها، وكانت كوريا إحدى هذه الدول التي أثرت عليها الحرب العالمية الثانية بشكل مباشر، إذ أنها وحتى الآن تعاني من التقسيم المفروض عليها، الذي شطر الدولة الواحدة والشعب الواحد إلى شطرين متناحرين بالرغم من تاريخهما الواحد وتراثهما الواحد. وقامت الحرب الكورية في 25 يونيو 1950 والموقف الدولي منها إذ أنها كانت تشكل خطورة كبيرة علي وضع الولايات المتحدة وسمعتها في آسيا، بعد أن أقامت دولة تابعة لها في كوريا الجنوبية سقطت علي يد دولة أقامها الاتحاد السوفيتي, وكان السائد حينئذ أن هذا العمل تم بإيحاء منه. ونظرًا لأهمية كوريا في السياسة الأمريكية جاء تدخل الولايات المتحدة التي كادت أن تنهي الحرب سريعًا لولا تدخل الصين الشعبية وبإيعاز من الاتحاد السوفيتي الذي ما كان ليرضي بسحق كوريا الشمالية من القوات الغربية مما يؤثر حتمًا علي سمعة الاتحاد السوفيتي والشيوعية المتنامية في آسيا. هذه هي قصة الحرب كاملة والمفاوضات التالية لها والتي أثمرت عن اتفاقية الهدنة.
