كان لاكتشاف الغاز في شرق البحر الأبيض المتوسط عند بداية القرن الحادي والعشرين أهمية كبرى في المجالين الاقتصادي والجيوسياسي؛ فاقتصادياً، يشكل هذا الغاز مصدراً طاقوياً محلياً نظيفاً، وتزداد أهميته مع الازدياد النسبي لاستهلاكه عالمياً. كما يُتوقَّع أن يزداد الاعتماد عليه مستقبلاً. وللغاز الطبيعي أبعاده الاستراتيجية أيضاً التي لا تقل أهمية عن تلك التي للنفط .
ويضيف اكتشاف الغاز في شرق المتوسط عاملاً جديداً إلى الصراع العربي - الإسرائيلي يتمثل في فتح ملف الحدود البحرية المختلَف بشأنها، على غرار ملف الحدود البحرية اللبنانية – الإسرائيلية، وفي محاولة إسرائيل وضع اليد على الموارد العربية أو تعطيل إنتاجها، كما في عرقلتها تطوير حقل غزة مارين منذ اكتشافه سنة 2000. وتطمح إسرائيل إلى التغلغل في قطاع الطاقة العربي من خلال تصدير الغاز إلى الدول المجاورة.
ونظراً إلى محدودية الاحتياطي الغازي الإسرائيلي المكتشف حتى الآن، تحاول إسرائيل مشاركة الدول المجاورة المنتجة في برامج تصديرها إلى الأسواق الأوروبية، كما في مشاركتها قبرص لتزويد محطتي التسييل المصرية بالغاز، ومن ثم تصديره. وتدرس إسرائيل أيضاً إمكان التصدير مع قبرص بواسطة خط أنابيب بحري إلى أوروبا عبر قبرص واليونان وإيطاليا. وعلى الرغم من دعم مفوضية السوق الأوروبية لدراسة المشروع، فإنه لا يزال حتى الآن يفتقر إلى المشتري، وبالتالي يُتوقَّع أن يتأخر تنفيذه.
