لا تزالُ منطقةُ البحرِ الأبيضِ المتوسِّطِ، مَهْدُ الحضاراتِ الكُبرى ومَحْضَنُ الدِّياناتِ التَّوحيديَّةِ الثَّلاثِ، شاهدةً على وقائعَ جمَّةٍ: ارتباطٍ سوسيو-اقتصاديٍّ بينَ الدُّوَلِ المتقدِّمةِ والدُّوَلِ السّائرةِ في طريقِ النُّمُوِّ، وعِظَمِ تَأثيرِ الاتِّجاهاتِ الدِّينيَّةِ والإثنيَّةِ العِرقيَّةِ في النِّزاعاتِ القائمةِ، ولُعبةِ التَّحالُفاتِ، والدِّيناميكيَّةِ الجيوستراتيجيَّةِ لِلمواردِ الطَّبيعيَّةِ. وقد شَهِدَت هذه المنطقةُ أَيضًا وَثَباتٍ كبيرةً من حيثُ التَّقدُّمُ والنُّمُوُّ. ومن أَبرزِ أَمثلةِ ذلك "الرَّبيعُ العربيُّ" في ضِفَّتِها الجَنوبيَّةِ، وأَزمةُ الدُّيونِ السِّياديَّةِ في ضِفَّتِها الشَّماليَّةِ. ويُمِدُّنا هذا الكتابُ، الذي ينتَقِلُ في تَناوُلِهِ مِن أَخطارِ الصِّراعاتِ إلى التَّطلُّعاتِ الاقتصاديَّةِ مُرورًا بتحليلِ أَساليبِ العَيشِ في هذه المنطقةِ، بعناصرَ مِفتاحيَّةٍ تُمَكِّنُنا من تحليلِ الوَضعِ في الحَوضِ المتَوَسِّطِيِّ، ويُبَيِّنُ أَنَّ هذا الحَوضَ ظَلَّ يَزخَرُ بتنوُّعٍ ديموغرافيٍّ وثَقافيٍّ واقتصاديٍّ يَحمِلُ في الوقتِ نفسِهِ الطُّموحَ المشتَرَكَ والخَوفَ من الآخَرِ.
