يتقدم السودان نحو عام حاسم في تاريخه الحديث، وسيمثل عام 2009 منعطفًا مصيريًا قد يحدد وجود السودان نفسه من عدمه، فهناك كثير من الاستحقاقات قد حان موعدها، بالإضافة لعدد من التحديات على المستوى المحلي والعالمي، سنكون جزءًا أصيلًا من تداعياتها. ورغم أن الأوضاع والتحديات تتطلب استجابة عالية القدرة والمسئولية، إلا أن المعطيات الواقعية لا تبشر باستعداد السودانيين- حكومة ومعارضة، ومجتمعًا مدنيًا وقوى حية- للمواجهة وإيجاد الحلول والبدائل. فما زالت الفجوة بين الممكن والواقع، بين القول والفعل، بين المنجز والمهمل واسعة. وهذا هو ما يسمى بالأزمة، أي أن تعجر الإمكانيات الكامنة عن ملاقاة الواقع والمطلوب. فقد أثبتت النخب- في كل مواقعها- عجزها الفكري والعملي. فهي لا تحلل وتفهم مشكلاتها بعقل موضوعي منهجي وقومي أيضًا. وهذا يقود بالتأكيد لتبني وسائل وآليات خاطئة ليست من نفس نوع المشكلة. وهنا تتناقض الوسائل مع الغايات، وهذا هو جوهر اللاعقلانية وفوضى الفكر والعمل.
وكان قد استبشر الجميع خيرًا بتوقيع اتفاقية السلام الشامل في مطلع عام 2005، ورأى فيها الجميع الفرصة الأخيرة لخلق سودان جديد. ولكن، الآن وبعد اتفاق المرحلة الانتقالية التي تنتهي في عام 2011، يظل التلكؤ والمناورة والمماطلة ودهاء السياسة: سادة الموقف. فالشريكان يظهران عدم جدية واضحة، أحدهما بسبب العجز، والآخر بسبب المكر.
والأزمة الاقتصادية والمالية، فهي قد أطلت على السودان قبل الأزمة العالمية التي فاقمت من شدة الأضرار. وأخيرًا هذه صورة تظهر قاتمة لمستقبل السلام ولكنها شديدة الواقعية في حالة إصرار الحاكمين على الخطأ واستمرار المعارضين في اللامبالاة وركون المواطنين للغيبوبة. السودان وطن على حافة الانهيار والاندثار ليلحق بكيانات بادت ودفنتها رمال الفشل التاريخي.
