هذه أقصى درجات البؤس واليأس، وهي قد ملأت أقطار نفوس قادتنا وجماهيرنا: وكما تكونوا يولي عليكم. فنحن في وطن تفصله أيام قليلة عن التقسيم والتشرذم. وأصبح استقلال البلاد على كف عفريت، ولا أدري ماذا سيكون رد إسماعيل الأزهري لو عاد للحياة، وهو القائل: أتينا لكم باستقلال مثل صحن الصيني سليم، لا شق لا طق! ليرى ماذا فعل أبناؤه بصحنه. فقد ظللنا منذ عام الاستقلال 1956 نعمل بعلم أو جهل، بوعي أو لا وعي على التفريط في هذا الاستقلال. ففتحنا الباب للانقلابات العسكرية وأمعنا في الإنشقاقات الحزبية حتى أصبحت مثل الرياضة الشعبية الحزبية. ولم تكتف النخبة بإدمان الفشل بل استكانت للهزل وعدم الجدية والأنانية المفرطة، وكل الذي يحدث الآن، ليس سببه تراث تجارة الرقيق ولا الاستعلاء العرقي ولا اختلاف الدين، ولا الزرقة والعروبة، بل فقط: العجز التنموي اي انتاج الثروة وعدالة توزيعها. فقد عجزنا عن تحويل الوطن، والذي نتغنى نفاقاً وكذباً بحبه، إلى بلد منتج وعادل ومساواتي وخال من الفساد. ومن هنا جاء الظلم والتهميش، وقابله السخط والعصيان والحروب.
