الاهتمام بالتراث يعني كشفه وتقويمه والأخذ بما يفيد، وهذا ما حاولته في تراث إخوان الصفا. فقد نقبت عما يتصل باللغة، سواء كان موضوعها عامًا أو خاصًا باللغة العربية، فقد نثروا أفكارهم اللغوية في ثنايا فصول رسائلهم ولم يلتزموا بوحدة الموضوع منتهجين ما يعرف عند العلماء بأسلوب الاستطراد، وعلى الباحث أن ينقر عما يريد، وأن يفتش عما يقصد.
وقد أسفر التنقير والتفتيش في النصوص المتناثرة عن جمع عدد من المسائل والقضايا اللغوية العامة والخاصة باللغة العربية وتيسيرًا لدرسها والنظر فيها أدرجتها في بابين: يختص أولهما بالقضايا اللغوية العامة، وثانيهما بالقضايا الخاصة باللغة العربية. وقد مهدت لهما بتمهيد تناولت فيه سبب اختيار الفلاسفة بصفة عامة وإخوان الصفا بصفة خاصة للكشف عن آرائهم اللغوية. كما ألقيت الضوء فيه- بإيجاز- على جماعة إخوان الصفا ورسائلهم بعامة، ثم حددت الرسائل التي يظهر فيها فكرهم اللغوي بخاصة، كما أشرت إلى المصادر التي استقى منها الإخوان فكرهم. ثم ختمت التمهيد بحصر القضايا الرئيسة التي أمكن استنباطها.
