هذا الكتاب يتضمن دراسة في علم الصوتيات الذي يهتم بدراسة الجانب الصوتي للغة ويهدف إلى تقنين وتقعيد الأداء السليم لها. وفي هذا الإطار يلقي الكاتب الضوء على كيفية دراسة الصوت اللغوي بصفة عامة، ودراسة الصوت في اللغة العربية بصفة خاصة على المستويات المختلفة، منتهجاً التيسير والبعد عن التعمق والإختلافات الفكرية في قضايا علم الصوتيات، في محاولة للربط بين تفكير العلماء العرب القدماء، وبين ما وصل إليه هذا التفكير اليوم عند علماء الغرب.
جاءت الدراسة في أربعة أبواب هي: الباب الأول: التعريف بعلم الصوتيات، الباب الثاني: الصوت اللغوي ومراحل تكوينه، الباب الثالث: أصوات اللغة العربية على مستوى الأفراد، وأما الباب الرابع والأخير فيتحدث عن المقطع الصوتي ونظامه في اللغة العربية، الوحدات الكلامية، والتقطيعة الكلامية والكلمة الصوتية.
