بهدف توضيح القيمة الجمالية للشعر الجاهلي وتوضيح الطور المبكر للاحساس بالجمال الفني في البيئة العربية؛ وبيان سمات هذا الجمال ودعائمه وصلته بالبيئة التي نشأ فيها تأتي هذه الدراسة كمحاولة لاستكشاف الصورة الفنية ومقوماتها اللغوية والنفسية والجمالية لدى امرئ القيس، لأن دراسة الصورة في هذه البيئة على ما يرى الكاتب إنما تعد دراسة للجانب الفني من خلال اللغة في فطريتها وبساطتها وذلك قبل أن تتشعب المذاهب الأدبية التي تحكم الأدب، وقبل أن ينقسم الدباء إلى أدباء فطرة أو إلى محافظين ومجددين.
يتألف الكتاب من تمهيد وثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة، أما التمهيد فاشتمل على محاولة لتحديد مفهوم الصورة الفنية في البلاغة والنقد العربي القديم ثم مفهومها في النقد العربي القديم ثم مفهومها في النقد الحديث. أما الباب الأول فتحدث عن المقومات اللغوية لشعر امرئ القيس، وأما الباب الثاني فتناول الصورة الفنية كما عرضها ديوان الشاعر من حيث علاقة الصورة بالمعنى ودلالات الصورة في شعر امرئ القيس. وينفرد الباب الثالث للحديث عن صورة امرئ القيس في ضوء النقد الحديث من حيث مناهج دراسة الصورة في النقد الحديث ومدى ضهور هذه المناهج في شعر امرئ القيس. وأخيراً خاتمة تتضمن أهم نتائج الدراسة.
