"قيل: أشعر الشعراء امرؤ القيس إذا ركب والنابغة إذا رهب أما لبيد، الشاعر الجاهلي فقد قال فيه: أشعر الناس ذو القروح. وقال الفرزدق: كان الشعر جملاً فنحر، فجاء امرؤ القيس فأخذ رأسه، أما الخليفة الراشدي علي بن أبي طالب فقد قال فيه أيضاً: رأيت امرأ القيس أحسن الشعراء نادرة وأسبقهم بادرة، وأنه لم يقل لرغبة ولا لرهبة. وحين سئل العباس ابن عبد المطلب عن الشعراء قال: امرؤ القيس سابقهم خسف لهم عين الشعر فاقتفر من معان عور أصح بصر.
هذا هو امرؤ الثيس الذي تأثر الشعراء بأسلوبه تأثراً بالغاً، وترنم المغنون بقصائده ومقطعاته منذ العصر الجاهلي حتى أوائل القرن العاشر للميلاد ولسوف يتم دراسة شعره بما انطوى عليه من بواعث نفسية وظروف اجتماعية وسياسية وتاريخية".
