فى مطلع عام 1938 جاء المستشرق الفرنسى ليفى بروفنسال إلى القاهرة، بدعوة من كلية الآداب فى الجامعة المصرية إذ ذاك، وألقى برعايتها، فى مارس من العام نفسه، ثلاث محاضرات فى الجمعية الجغرافية الملكية بالقاهرة عن : "الحضارة العربية فى إسبانيا" باللغة الفرنسية، وجمع هذه المحاضرات فى العام نفسه، وأضاف إليها موجزاً بالمصادر الهامة التى عاد إليها، وملحقاً بالتواريخ البارزة فى تاريخ الأندلس، سياسياً واقتصادياً واجتماعياً وفكرياً، وطبع ذلك كله باللغة الفرنسية فى القاهرة، وصدرت الطبعة الأولى منه بعد شهرين من إلقاء المحاضرات، أو إن شئت الدقة فى 30 من أبريل عام 1938، بعنوان "الحضارة العربية فى إسبانيا نظرة مجملة". ثم أعاد نشر هذه المحاضرات، أو الكتاب، مرة ثانية فى باريس، عام 1948، فى نطاق سلسلة الدراسات التى كان يشرف على إصدارها، تحت عنوان: "إسلام أمس واليوم". وأضفت إلى هذه الترجمة مقالاً كان ليفى بروفنسال قد كتبه فى "مجلة المعهد المصرى" فى مدريد، العدد الأول منها، وصدر عام 1953، بعنوان: "المذهب المالكى فى الأندلس، وإسهامات المذاهب المشرقية الأخرى". لأنى رأيت ذلك مفيداً فى توضيح بعض الآراء التى أهملها المؤلف فى المحاضرات، أو جاء بها مجملة للغاية.
