في مطلع عام 1938 جاء المستشرق الفرنسي ليفى بروفنسال إلى القاهرة, بدعوة من كلية الآداب في الجامعة المصرية إذ ذاك, وألقى برعايتها, في مارس من العام نفسه, ثلاث محاضرات في الجمعية الجغرافية الملكية بالقاهرة عن: "الحضارة العربية في إسبانيا" باللغة الفرنسية, وجمع هذه المحاضرات في العام نفسه, وأضاف إليها موجزاً بالمصادر المهمة التي عاد إليها, وملحقاً بالتواريخ البارزة في تاريخ ال في مطلع عام 1938 جاء المستشرق الفرنسي ليفى بروفنسال إلى القاهرة, بدعوة من كلية الآداب في الجامعة المصرية إذ ذاك, وألقى برعايتها, في مارس من العام نفسه, ثلاث محاضرات في الجمعية الجغرافية الملكية بالقاهرة عن: "الحضارة العربية في إسبانيا" باللغة الفرنسية, وجمع هذه المحاضرات في العام نفسه, وأضاف إليها موجزاً بالمصادر المهمة التي عاد إليها, وملحقاً بالتواريخ البارزة في تاريخ الأندلس, سياسياً واقتصادياً واجتماعياً وفكرياً, وطبع هذا كله باللغة الفرنسية في القاهرة, وصدرت الطبعة الأولى منه بعد شهرين من إلقاء المحاضرات.
وقد أضفت إلى هذه الترجمة مقالاً كان ليفى بروفنسال قد كتبه في "مجلة المعهد المصري" في مدريد, العدد الأول منها, وصدر عام 1953, بعنوان: "المذهب المالكي في الأندلس, وإسهامات المذاهب المشرقية الأخرى le malikism andalous et les apportes doctrinaux de I orient". لأني رأيت ذلك مفيداً في توضيح بعض الآراء التي أهملها المؤلف في المحاضرات, أو جاء بها مجملة للغاية, في الوقت الذي نعرف فيه جميعاً الدور المهم الذي لعبه الفقهاء في حياة هذا القطر الوحيد الذي غابت عنه شمس الإسلام بعد قرون طويلة, وليس ببعيد أن تشرق من جديد.
