يرصد المؤلف فى هذا الكتاب تطور المفهوم الاجتماعى للمسرح عبر العصور منذ مايعرف بالغريزة التمثيلية عند الإنسان الأول, ثم يتابع الدور الاجتماعى للمسرح منذ البدايات عند الإغريق وحتى القرن العشرين, مركزا على الاتجاهات المسرحية الرئيسية فى المسرح المعاصر, التى أسست تقنيات أدائية من أجل تأكيد العلاقة بين المسرح المعاصر, كما يعرج المؤلف لمحاولات العلوم الإنسانية الحديثة التى سعت لإعادة تعريف الفن المسرحى فى علاقته بالمجتمع, ثم ينتقل إلى تحليل تقنيات الإخراج المسرحى بين العرض الملحمى عند "برتولد بريشت" والعرض الأنثروبولوجى المسرحى عند "أيوجينيو باربا" فى محاولة للربط بين منهجيهما, ومن ثم, يتعرض الكتاب إلى ثنائية الممثل والدور عند كل منهما, وأسلوبيهما فى إعداد الممثل وتدريبه وفق أسس محددة, وكذلك أساليبيهما فى تصميم الحيز المسرحى الذى يجمع بين المؤدين والمتفرجين بما يحقق غرضا اجتماعيا للمسرح.
