يشكل المسرح الملحمي الذي أسس له وطوره المخرج الألماني "برتولد بريخت" عنصراً فكرياً وجمالياً قد استثمره مسرح الطفل من خلال طروحاته الجمالية وأهدافه وغاياته المرهونة بالمتلقي وطبيعة تلقيه للعمل الفني المرتبطة بالدهن والمتخلية عن فعل التعاطف السلبي، فالمسرح الملحمي يسعى إلى تضمين وسائله التعبيرية أهدافاً في التعلم والترفيه وكسر الإيهام وهي أهداف شاملة وضعها بريخت في مسرحه ليتجاوز المقولات الدرامية والفلسفية للمسرح الأرسطي، وليشخص الحياة والواقع فنياً برؤيا معاصرة لزمنه، وبذلك فقد جاء المسرح الملحمي بمبادئ وقيم فكرية وجمالية تناقض مبادئ المسرح الدرامي الأرسطي، وكان هدف هذه المبادئ الجديدة هو إحلال نشاط فكري ثاقب ونقدي أساساً لدى المتفرج محل المعايشة المستكينة القاصرة.
إذ تتطلب عملية الإحلال المشار إليها في جوهر تطبيقات "بريخت" المسرحية تغييراً جذرياً في طرق توظيف العناصر الدرامية على مستوى النص والعرض والتمثيل والتلقي، وبذلك أعلن "بريخت" في مسرحه الملحمي عدم إتفاقه مع "ارسطو طاليس" ومفهومه للمحاكاة من الناحية البنائية والفكرية كما أنه لم يتفق مع "ستانسلافسكي" بشأن تقنيات الممثل ذات التأثير الإندماجي.
من هنا، جاءت وظيفة المسرح الملحمي التعبيرية التي تسعى إلى تغيير الواقع الإجتماعي عن طريق نقده وخلق روح مرتكزة على علم إجتماع قام على كشف علاقات الناس وإظهار أسبابها ونتائجها.
