يضمّ هذا الكتاب عملين مهمّين من أعمال الدكتور الطبيب "أحمد زكي أبي شادي" عن "رباعيّات الخيّام": الأوّل "المنظومة" عن ترجمة الشاعر العراقيّ "جميل صدقي الزهاوي" النثريّة عن الفارسيّة، والآخر "المترجمة" عن عمريّات "فيتزجيرالد" الإنجليزيّة.
لقد حرصت على بعثهما لطول العهد بهما، ولأنَّهما - ولا سيّما المنظومة - لم يُعتَنَ بهما كثيراً، ولم يُعرّفا المعرفةَ القمينة بهما كغيرهما مَما نُظمَ وتُرجمَ من رباعيّاتٍ منسوب أكثرها إلى الخيّام.
وقد حرّرتهما بدقّةٍ تامّة، وأدرجت الأصول العربيّة للمنظومة، والإنجليزيّةَ للمترجمة، وصدّرتهما بسيرةٍ تذكيريّةٍ لأبي شادي، ودرستهما كلاً على حدة دراسةً نقديّةً مكثفةً تفيهما حقّهما بما لهما وهو كثير، وما عليهما وهو قليل.
وألحقت بالعملين الرباعيّاتِ العشَرَ الأوّلَ، وهو كل ما بقي من ترجمته الأولى لعمريّات فيتزجيرالد، الّتي فقدت مع ما فُقد من آثاره.
