يحتل مفهوم التفكير مكانا محورياً في لغة العامة والمتخصصين فالمجتمع يطالب افراده بالتفكير - والرئيس يطالب المرؤسين بالتفكير والآباء يطالبون الأبناء بالتفكير والمعلم يطالب الدارسين بالتفكير وهذا ما يعنينا في هذا التقديم - فالمعلم يقدر دور التفكير ليس في التعلم فحسب بل في الحياة ولذلك فهو يسعى لتدريب الدارسين على التفكير وذلك بأن يطلب منهم أن يفكروا - ليسترجعوا مادة أو يعقدوا مقارنة أو يستخلصوا نتيجة من مقدمات ما.
ولكن السؤال هو هل نحن نبذل جهداً مقصوداً لكي نعلم الدارسين كيف يفكروا - هل نعلم الدارسين أن يميزوا بعض العمليات المعرفية المتطلبة للاسترجاع، وتلك المتطلبة للمقارنة أو لإستخلاص نتيجة من مقدمات؟، في ضوء التقدم الذي احرزه علم النفس المعرفي لا يمكن قبول مفهوم التفكير باعتباره: أولاً مفهوماً أحادياً، ثانياً مفهوماً ضمنياً وداخلياً غامضاً، فالتفكير منظومة من عمليات معرفية متمايزة متفاعلة، وهي قابلة للملاحظة والقياس، والتدريب والتنمية كما أنها قابلة للاختزال والضمور.
