لقد ظهر العديد من المفاهيم التي ارتبطت بمفهوم المجتمع المدني ومن هذه المفاهيم مفهوم رأس المال الاجتماعي والذي يشير إلى شبكة العلاقات الاجتماعية التي تتضمن مجموعة من القيم والمعايير الأخلاقية ويتم تكوينها في إطار بناء اجتماعي معين ويمتد هذا البناء من الأسرة وجماعات الجيرة والأصدقاء ومؤسسات المجتمع المدني إلى بقية مؤسسات المجتمع.
كما تركزت فكرة وجود علاقات بين المجتمع المدني ورأس المال الاجتماعي على مجموعة من الحقائق، أهمها أن هناك ما يسمى بالموارد الاجتماعية القابلة للاستثمار من جانب أفراد المجتمع. وهذه الموارد الاجتماعية تتضح من خلال الروابط أو الشبكات الاجتماعية.
وترجع الجذور الفكرية لمفهوم رأس المال الاجتماعي ومفهوم المجتمع المدني إلى كتابات (اليكس توكفيل) الذي أكد أهمية التضامن والتعاون من أجل تحقيق أغراض مشتركة حيث أشار إلى ما أسماه بعادات العقل والقلب، والتي تتمثل في الثقة والتعاون، والاحترام المتبادل والتبادلية التي يكتسبها الأفراد بعضويتهم في هذه الروابط المدنية بكافة أشكالها ملتزمة في ذلك بقيم ومعايير الاحترام والتراضي والتسامح والإدارة السليمة للتنوع والاختلاف.
لهذا فإن المجتمع المدني هو أحد المجالات الرئيسية التي يوجد فيها رأس المال الاجتماعي القائم على الثقة، حيث تؤكد أغلب الكتابات أن الثقة تمثل جوهر المجتمع المدني وتلعب دوراً مهما في تدعيم الديمقراطية، حيث إن مفهوم الثقة ينصرف إلى معاني التعاطف والتسامح، والتضامن، والاحترام.
