الطلاب في بلادنا يتعلّمون في المدارس مواضيع علمية مثل: العلوم النظرية واللّغات والعلوم الإجتماعية، كما أن برنامجهم التعليمي يتضمن الفن التشكيلي، والرياضة، وقبل كلّ شيء التربية الإسلامية.
ولأن العالم يسرع نحو التكنولوجيا المتقدمة فيجب الإهتمام بتعليم العلوم النظرية والرياضيات، والتكنولوجيا، وهي العلوم التطبيقية، والهندسة، وهذه المجالات الأربعة (علوم، رياضيات، تكنولوجيا، هندسة) هي المواضيع التي يهتم بها برنامج STEM في التعليم، حيث أن هذا الإسم مشتق من الحروف الأولى لهذه الكلمات: "Science", "Technology", "Engineering", "Mathematic"
وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن هذا البرنامج معمول به في مختلف دول العالم التي تستخدم أسلوب التعلم بالتحقق والبحث والإستقصاء، ويُعد هذا البرنامج بمثابة فكر جديد متعدد التخصصات للتعلم بالمشروعات عن طريق دمج المناهج بتجارب عملية يقوم من خلالها الطلاب بتطبيق العلوم والتكنولوجيا والهندسة والرياضيات في سياقات تربط بين الدراسة والعمل والمجتمع.
وتقوم كل مدرسة تتبع هذا البرنامج بتحديد مشكلة واحدة تعالج الأزمات التي يمر بها المجتمع، ليتم تدريس كافة المواد بما يخدم هذه المشكلة ويقدم كل فريق من الطلاب في نهاية العام الدراسي مشروعاً لحل تلك المشكلة المجتمعية.
