لبناء علاقات ناجحة مع أحبائنا والمجتمع ككل، نحن بحاجة إلى فهم واهتمام الآخرين, لاحتياجاتنا، ورغباتنا ومشاعرنا.
والتعاطف يساعدنا على فهم الآخرين, وماذا تعني الحياة بالنسبة لهم.
بدون التعاطف، تكون محاولات تواصلنا مع الآخرين وكأنها حركة المرور في اتجاه واحد, بل أسوأ من ذلك لأننا سوف نعمل ونتصرف حسب مصلحتنا الذاتية دون اهتمام بالآخرين, وهذا سيؤدي إلى وقوع مشاكل بكل تأكيد.
نحن كبشر كائن اجتماعي لا يمكن أن نعيش إلا ضمن مجتمع, ولا يمكن أن نتقبّل بعض ونتحمل الأعباء والهموم والمشاكل التي تواجهنا دون تعاطف.
عندما نفهم أنفسنا ونفهم الآخرين من حولنا، نكون أكثر استعدادا للتواصل, كما يسهل على الآخرين معرفة احتياجاتنا ورغباتنا, وسنكون أكثر استعدادا لنقول للناس ما نريد أن يعرفوه عنّا وتقديم أفكارنا ومبادئنا ومعالجة القضايا الحساسة دون الإساءة للآخرين, وفي نفس الوقت سوف نتكون قادرين على الحصول على الدعم من الآخرين، والتفاهم معهم وكسب تعاطفهم, وهذا
يساعدنا على قبول آخرين يختلفون كثير عنّا, ويمكننا تحسين التفاعلات الاجتماعية، وخاصة في حالات التنوع العرقي أو الثقافي.
والتعاطف يمكن أن يساعد أيضا على تشجيع السلوك نحو الاهتمام بالمحتاجين من
رعاية ومساعدة، وكذلك التسامح كما هو الحال مع مرضى الإيدز، أو الذين يعانون من الاضطرابات النفسية، الذين قد ينبذهم المجتمع.
