يتلقّى المعلّم المتقاعد "بيوس فيرنانديز" مفكّرةً قديمةً وُجدت في الغرفة الخلفيّة لمَتْجرٍ في شرق إفريقيا، ويتبيّن أنّها مذكّرات ضابطٍ استعماريٍّ بريطانيٍّ عاش قبل سبعة عقودٍ في البلدة الصغيرة "كيكونو". تأسر المذكّرات المعلّم، فيحاول إعادة خلق العالم الموجود فيها، وبثّ الحياة في الأرواح المحبوسة هناك، مكتشفاً سرّاً قاتماً متوقّداً، سرّ رجُلٍ بسيطٍ يُدعى "بيبا"، صارت حياته بعد زواجه من "مريامو" مرتبطةً ارتباطاً مؤلماً بحياة الضابط الإنجليزيّ، وفي أثناء تتّبُع "فيرنانديز" دربَ المفكّرة، يصبح آخر الأمر هو نفسه واحداً من حكايات كتاب الأسرار. في هذه الرواية التي حازت جائزة "غيلر" في دروتها الأولى 1994، يكتب "فاسانجي" عملاً مؤثّراً غنيّاً بالأسئلة، عن عالمٍ شديد الغنى والتعقيد، نابضٍ بصورٍ ملوّنةٍ، على خلفيّة تغيّراتٍ تاريخيّةٍ كبيرة.
