جورج شامي: ولد عام ١٩٣١ في بيروت.
—صنف أستاذاً جامعياً بدرجة دكتوراه دولة من الجامعة اللبنانية عام ١٩٧٨.
—عين مديراً لكلية الإعلام والتوثيق في الجامعة اللبنانية في أواخر كانون الثاني ١٩٧٨ (الفرع الثاني) حتى أيلول ١٩٨١، حيث قدم استقالته.
اتخذ الصحافة مهنة له عام ١٩٥٢، وبدأ بممارستها في جريدة «النهار»، ومنها انتقل للعمل في الصحف والمجلات والوكالات التالية؛ محرراً ومديراً ورئيساً للتحرير: «صدى لبنان»، «الحياة»، الشراع»، «العمل»، «الرأي العام» في الكويت، «الاقتصاد اللبناني والعربي»، «الوكالة الوطنية للأنباء» «الحسناء»، «الأسبوع العربي»، «الأنوار»، «الوطن العربي»، في باريس، و«المشاهد السياسي» في لندن.

هذه الرواية هي تجربة شخصية ومبنية على أحداث وتجارب حقيقية، وإن أي تغير – ولو جزئي – في سياق الأحداث وأسماء بعض الشخصيات لا يؤثّر على الحقيقة والحدث التاريخي.
بل هو جاء لخدمة مقتضيات الدراما والسرد الأدبي.
كانت الحرب في لبنان برمّتها سلسلة من أعمال القتل والخطف والقصف والتفجيرات والإغتيالات، مارستها وارتكبتها كل الأطراف المتصارعة وتحت عناوين مختلفة في فترات ومناطق متعددة، ارتكبت المجازر والقتل الجماعي وأعمال العنف الأعمى، لا أحد بريء من كل العنف الذي حصل.
شكّل صيف 1982 منعطفاً أساسياً في حياتي ووعيي السياسي والإجتماعي والإنساني، كنت ورفاقي لا تزال على مقاعد الدراسة ولم نفهم بالعمق ما يدور حولنا.
حسبناها مغامرة... وإذ بها "لزلزال" هزّ كياننا وسلامنا وبراءتنا... فواجهنا الموت مراراً... وصولاً إلى مجزرة صبر وشاتيلا حيث عملنا كمتطوعين في الدفاع المدني واكتشفنا الموت بأبشع صوره، ورائحته الكريهة، التي استمرت ترافقنا طوال حياتنا
