تقف أولريكا على رؤوس أصابعها وهي تطل من نوافذ البيت الصيفي. كل شيء، حتى أدق التفاصيل، ما يزال تماماً كما تتذكره: غرفة الجلوس المريحة بأرائكها المخططة؛ خزانة البحارة؛ المقعد الهزاز الأبيض، والرفوف التي تحيط الجدران كلها، مكتظة بالأجزاء والقطع... كان ذلك أشبه بالتحديق مباشرة في الماضي الذي عاد كله إليها مرة واحدة: أسرة الجيران التي كان من السهل الوقوع في حبها، وابنة الأسرة التي كانت صديقتها الأولى الحقيقية.
تعمل الروائية هيرمانسون على مزيج بين الواقعية والحكاية الخيالية، مستجيبة لاهتمام أدب الشمال المتجدد بالواقعية في أواخر القرن العشرين. وتوظف الكاتبة تقنية «تيار الوعي» وتناوب أصوات القص لتوليف حبكة درامية تحيل الرواية إلى منطقة قصة الغموض. وتتولى القص شخصيتان، تتناوبان الرواية بالتوازي، ولا تتبين العلاقة بينهما إلا في الشوط الأخير من القص مع انحلال العقدة.
