يعجّ العالم حالياً بأحداث العنف التي تُرتكب بإسم الدّين، الأمر الذي يثير السؤال الآتي: هل الأديان حقّاً هي المصدر الحقيقي والفعلي للعنف والتطرّف؟.
هذا السؤال هو محور كتاب كارين آرمسترونغ، حقول الدّم الذي يرسم صورة لما يتعرّض له العالم حالياً من حالات العنف والتطرّف بإسم الدّين.
تبدأ المؤلّفة كتابها بإستعراض العنف المنسوب إلى الدّين، عبر الكشف عن الدوافع المركّبة والعوامل السياسيّة والإقتصاديّة والإجتماعيّة المتشابكة التي تقف خلف حالات العنف الموصوفة بـ"الدّينية" مثل: بعض الحروب في أوروبا، وهجمات تنظيم القاعدة والحركات الجهاديّة وسواها.
وتحاول المؤلّفة دحض الرؤية المشوّهة عن الإسلام والسائدة في الغرب منذ القرن العشرين، معتبرة أن معظم الصراعات التي يُنظر إليها عادة على أنها قامت بدوافع دينيّة، كانت لها أبعاد سياسيّة والإقتصاديّة، التي وضع فيها الدّين، من أجل فهم السبب الذي جعل العنف يُنسَب إليه.
كما توصّلت إلى فكرة مفادها أن التطرّف والعنف غالباً ما ينبعان من الإستبداد، وتحديداً إستبداد القادة والأنظمة الحاكمة، وقد دعمت المؤلّفة فكرتها بتقديم نماذج متنوّعة تبدأ من عصور الحضارات القديمة (الإغريقية والهندية والصينية...) إلى عصر الإقطاع وإستغلال ملاّك الأراضي للفلاّحين إلى مذابح الثورة الفرنسية... إلى الحربين العالميتين وصولاً إلى أحداث أيلول/ سبتمبر وما بعدها.
خصّصت المؤلّفة عدّة فصول لنقاش أدّعاء علاقة الدّين الإسلامي بالعنف، مستحضرة في نقاشها مفهومَين: الحداثة من جهة، والعلمانيّة من جهة أخرى... وأنتجت خلاصات تاريخيّة وسياسيّة أثارت كثيراً من الجدل في الغرب، لكونها خلصت إلى نتيجة مفادها أن العنف الدمّوي هو ابنٌ العلمانيّة والحداثة والدّولة بشكلَيها الإمبراطوري والحديث لا الإسلام.
