رواية "عشاق السماء والدماء"، قليلٌ من الأشخاص مَنْ سمع باسمها في رحاب استانبول هذه، وليس هناك أحد سوى فرقة الإنكشارية مَنْ ذهب إلى هناك ورآها بأم العين، مدينة تسمى (بسارابيا Besarabya) تُحاذي أراضي «كفرة» موسكو في الشّمال.
في هذه المملكة نهر مشهور باسم (دينيَستر Dinyester)، نهر كبيرٌ جدّاً، ونهر آخر يجاوره باسم (روت Reut) وعلى ضفاف هذا النهر تقع مدينة تدعى (بلْتسي Beltsi). وقرب مدينة (بلْتسي) هذه، قرية صغيرة باسم (ويشلوف…Vislov)، تُعَدُّ مسقط رأسي (فقير) أيْ صاحب اسمه القديم بترو بن ميشيل.
أنا (فقير) ـ بترو سابقاً ـ بقيْتُ أعمل حتى السنة التاسعة عشرة من عمري في صيد السمك وتربية الخنازير في القرية، لم أكن حينذاك قد سمعْت اسمَ أيّ شيء أو حدث أعطى لحياتي معنى حقيقيّاً، إلى أن أصبحت جنديّ مشاة ضدّ التّرك بأمر من أمير المقاطعة، وفي شهر أيّار ذاته.
