يتميز كتاب أمارتيا سين بتناوله النقدي الجذري لمشكل "الهوية" التي تمثل مصدرا عميقا للصراعات العالمية في العقود الأخيرة خاصة. وربما كان هذا المشكل أوضح في العالمين العربي والإسلامي مما عداهما. ذلك أن الهوية الدينية / المذهبية صارت كأنها المعرّف الرئيس للإنسان فيهما. وأسباب استشراء هذا اللجوء إلى الهوية الدينية أو المذهبية تآكل الدولة الوطنية وتآكل ايديولوجيتها الموحّدة لمواطنيها لإبعادهم عن الانحصار بـ"هوياتهم" الصغيرة التي نشأوا عليها.
وكما يبين المؤلف فإن حصر الانسان نفسه في هوية واحدة إنما هو إفقار له وقطع له عن التواصل مع الآخرين، وينشأ هذا الإنحصار من التعامي عن حقيقة أن الإنسان يعيش في شبكة هائلة من العلاقات مع الآخرين في محيطه الصغير والمحيطات الأكبر، على السواء، وتزيده كل علاقة من هذه العلاقات ترابطاً بالآخرين، وتزيد حياته، كذلك، غنًى، وعلاقته مع الآخرين توثُّقاً.
إن كثيراً من المشكلات التي يعاني منها الإنسان في الوقت الحاضر، خاصة في العالمين العربي والإسلامي، تنبع من إنحشاره في دائرة صغيرة من العلاقات التي يتراءى له أنها تمثّل قَدَراً لا مفرّ له منه لأن يعيش في شبكة العلاقات الوحيدة التي ينتمي إليها...
