"قالت مصادر قضائية إن محكمة سودانية قضت بإعدام امرأة في السابعة والعشرين من عمرها لتحوُّلها إلى المسيحية، وطلبت المحكمة من مريم يحيى إبراهيم التراجع عن إعتناق المسيحية والعودة إلى الإسلام؛ ووجّهت لها أيضاً تهمة الزنا لزواجها من رجل مسيحي، وسأل القاضي "عباس الخليفة" مريم عمَّا إذا كانت ستعود إلى الإسلام، وقالت المصادر القضائية إنها بعد أن قالت "أنا مسيحية" صدر الحكم بالإعدام". - رويترز 15 أيار / مايو 2014
إنطلاقاً من هذه الحادثة التي أثارت جدلاً في المجتمع السوداني وزوبعة من التدخلات الخارجية، يكتب حامد الناظر حكاية امرأة تتعرّض للظلم والقساوة والإذلال، وحتى بعد أن ظنّت أنها تحررت من الأسر في معسكرات الحرب في وادي العقيق، حيث تعرضت لعذابات رهيبة، وجدت نفسها أسيرة مجتمع لا يرحم أذاقها المرارة والخسران، إلى أن قررت أن تأخذ مصيرها بيدها.
أمام قاعة المحكمة قالت لنفسها: "أنا اليوم مجرّد امرأة، بكل ما يعني هذا التعريف من عدل وحيف، وهذه الحفلة ليست إلا الوجه الآخر لما خفت منه وسعيت إليه في الوقت نفسه، ولم أكن أعرف ماهيته على وجه الدقّة، لكنني عرفته الآن، أن أكون أنا ببساطة؛ أنا ابنة الحرب وضحيتها ومعناها، إن كان لها معنى".
يجدر الإشارة أن هذه الرواية قد وصلت إلى القائمة الطويلة للجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية للعام 2021.
