افتتحت المؤلفة روايتها بهذه الجمل المعبرة لتستطيع إيصال المغزى المطلوب من روايتها, فقد قالت: بعد ظهيرة رطبة من شهر تشرين الأول كنت أستخرج حسابات شهر أيلول من دفتر الحسابات- الأم رمادي اللون. فأنا أعمل في محل بقالية في شمال دبلن ومضى على عملي هذا عامان. كان صاحب البقالية وزوجته من أهالي الريف, مثلي أنا, كانا لطيفين ولكنهما يحبان مني أن أعمل بجد ووعداني بزيادة راتبي خلال العام الجديد, والشيء القليل الذي أعرفه أنني سوف أمضي بعدئذٍ الى حياة مختلفة. وبسبب المطر لم يأت العديد من الزبائن, لذلك كتبت الفواتير بسرعة ثم عدت إلى القراءة, كان لدي كتاب أخفيه في دفتر الحسابات- الأم, ولذلك كنت أستطيع القراءة دون خوف من مفاجأتي. كاتن كتاباً جميلاً ولكنه مثير للحزن. وعنوانه (الليل ناعم), وقفزت عن نصف الكلمات بسبب شغفي كي أقرأه بسرعة, لأنني أردت أن أعرف فيما إذا كان الرجل سيترك المرأة أم لا. فكل الرجال اللطفاء هم في الكتب, رجال غرباء, معقدون, وحالمون. ذلك الصنف من الرجال الذي أحبه كثيراً. وبهذا الأسلوب الرائع تتابع المؤلفة روايتها الشيقة والمثيرة لتشد انتباه القارىء لها.
