تنطلق هذه الدراسة من فرضتين أساسيتين: أولاً أن الإستشراق الألماني في القرن التاسع عشر لم يكن أقل إمبريالية وهيمنة من بغية الأنماط الإسستشراقية الغربية، بعبارة أخرى فإن الإستشراق الألماني لم يكن علمي الطابع عكس ما أشار إليه إدوارد سعيد، فقد كان بدوره وإلى جانب الإستشراق الفرنسي والإنجليزي، أيضاً إستعمارياً وإمبريالياً حيث عبر دائماً وبوضوح عن السعي الألماني إلى الهيمنة على الآخر غير الأوروبي.
وثانياً: يُلاحظ وجود إستمرارية في عصرنا الراهن للفكر الإستشراقي المهيمن في الدول الناطقة باللغة الألمانية حتى في عصر ما اصطلح عليه بــ "ما بعد الكولونيالية"، حيث تفترض هذه الدراسة أن هذا الفكر الإستشراقي في السياق الألماني لا يزال قائماً إلى يومنا هذا، أي حتى مع مطلع الألفية الثالثة الجديدة، حيث يمكن كشفه ضمن نصوص أدب الرحلة الألماني المعاصر ذاته رغم نهاية الفترة الإستعمارية في معظم دول العالم منذ عقود.
وللتحقق من هاتين الفرضتين فإن هذه الدراسة التي نال عنها صاحبها جائزة ابن بطوطة لأدب الرحلة - فرع الدراسات تفكك الخطاب المدروس في ثلاث مباحث رئيسية، يعرض المبحث الأول منها الأسس الأيديولوجية للإستشراق وتطورها بر التاريخ، ثم يتعاطى المبحث الثاني مع أدب الرحلة الأوروبي ومعه الألماني بوصفه جنساً أدبياً مبرراً تطوره وخصائصه المميزة له وأيضاً إرتباطه الوثيق بالظاهرة الإستشراقية.
اعتماداً على هاته المعطيات النظرية يروم المبحث الثالث والأخير من هذه الدراسة المقارنة، عرض نتائج تحليل مجموعة من النصوص الرحلية الألمانية من القرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن الحادي والعشرين من أجل التحقق من فرضيات هاته الدراسة.
وقال نال عنها الباحث الجائزة عن جدارة وإستحقاق، لما تميزت به الدراسة من موضوعية في القراءة وإقتدار في البحث، ووضوح في المنهج، وجدة في تناول الموضوعات، وسعة أفق في التحليل والإستنتاج.
