قضت الظروف السياسية القاهرة أن لا تسهم المانيا اسهاماً مباشراً في نجاح العلماء الأميركيين والبريطانيين والكنديين في تفتيت نواة الذرة واستخدامها في عام 1945 للحرب. ولكن لقد ظلت ابحاث العلماء الألمان، وعلى رأسهم "انشتين" هي المفتاح السحري الذي مكن أولئك العلماء، مع ذلك، من ولوج العالم المسحور الذي يعتبر اكتشافه اليوم حدث الأحداث في تاريخ البشرية جمعاء.
وفي هذا الكتاب يسجل "خيرات البيضاوي" بعض جوانب المشكلة الألمانية التي شغلت في الماضي القريب الدوائر الدبلوماسية العالمية، وهي التي أتاحت لألمانية الغربية أن يقود وتلحق بركب العلم النووي، وأن تشارك في تطوير استخدام الذرة للأغراض السلمية، وكيف تضافرت القوى الفردية والحكومية في ستينيات القرن المنصرم في بناء وإنشاء ما يعرف بـ "مؤسسة بناء وتشغيل المفاعل الذرية" وهي المؤسسة التي أخذت على عاتقها أمر درس استثمار الطاقة سلمياً.
عن هذا العالم الجديد يحدثنا المؤلف بعد أن اتيحت له زيارة محطة المفاعل الذرية بالقرب من مدينة مونيخ، وقد شرح له عالم يوناني كيفية عمل هذه المحطة، وما هي أسرار النواة، وكيف يمكن تحويل الدنيا كلها في لحظة جنون إلى فرن ذري هائل إذا ما استخدمت الذرة في غير الأغراض السلمية؟!
يبقى أن نشير أن الكتاب صدر في العام 1960 حين كانت المشكلة الألمانية ومسألة توحيد ألمانيا معجزة خارقة بنظر الجميع...
