روى الإمام مسلم من حديث أبي موسى الأشعري أن رجلاً أعرابياً أتى النبى "صلى الله عليه وسلم" فقال: يا رسول الله، الرجل يقاتل للمغنم، والرجل يقاتل ليذكر، والرجل يقاتل ليرى مكانه، فمن في سبيل الله؟ فقال رسول الله "صلى الله عليه وسلم": "من قاتل لتكون كلمة الله أعلى فهو في سبيل الله".
إن الأعرابي لا يعلم، جاء لمعلم الأمة "صلى الله عليه وسلم" يسأله، إن مقاصد الرجال كثيرة ومتعددة، فأيهم ينال شرف الجهاد في سبيل الله، وأيهم يدخله مقصده في أهل الشهادة إن مات؟، فكان جوابه "صلى الله عليه وسلم" أن من كانت نيته إعلاء كلمة الله فهو الذي في سبيل الله، فأي أمر فرق بين ما لهذا الأخير من ثواب الدنيا وحسن المآل في الآخرة، وبين هؤلاء الذين ليس لهم إلا ما قصدوا إلى تحصيله من مغانم أوصيت وشهرة، أو رياء وسمعة، مما لا ينفعهم في الآخرة؟، إنها النية، المقصد، والغرض، والغاية التي تحرك كل منهم بغرض تحقيقها وتوجه إليها، وكانت هي الطاقة الداخلية التي تدفع به إلى هدفه.
لهذا كان كتابي هذا دعوةً إلى من يصله من أمة محمد "صلى الله عليه وسلم"، أن أصلح نيتك وأخلصها لله سبحانه، وألا تغفل عن النية في كل عمل من أعمالك، سواء كان عملاً تعبدياً خالصاً، أو عملاً مباحاً، ترجو بفعله ثواب الله، كأن يكون وسيلة مباحة إلى طاعة أو قربة، وأذكر بأنه بصلاح الباطن يصلح الظاهر، وبصلاحهما يصلح العمل، وبصلاحه يكون رضا الله عز وجل، وبرضاه جل وعلا تحسن الخاتمة، بإذن الله، وبحسن الخاتمة يكون الفوز بنعيم الآخرة، بمشيئته سبحانه ومصاحبة الأنبياء والصديقين والشهداء، وحسن أولئك رفيقاً.
