هذا الكتاب يحق لصاحبه أن يسميه نظرية جديدة في العروض العربي، وصاحب هذا العمل هو المستشرق الفرنسي "ستانسلاس جويار". ونظريته هي محاولة جادة لتفهم عروض الشعر العربي على أساس الوحدة الزمنية الموسيقية.
والنظرية التي تقدم في هذا الكتاب لها ميزة لا تنكر، وهي المحافظة على معلومات العروضيين العرب وعدم المساس بها، والجديد هو توضيح هذه المعلومات ورؤيتها تحت ضوء جديد، حديث يقوم البناء على ملاحظة العلاقة الوثقى التي توحد بين الموسيقى والعروض، وذلك بإدراك قيمة الإيقاعات العربية والكشف عن أصولها وبيان وتفسير شتى التغيرات التي تحدث لموسيقى البيت على أساس إيقاعي.
مائة وعشرون عاماً مضت على تأليف هذا الكتاب، وثلاثون عاماً مرت على ترجمته، يخرج الآن إلى النور-بعد أن مر بملابسات طريفة وصعوبات حالت دون طبعه-ليحقق إضافة نوعية في درس العروض العربي، وليسهم بتقديم نظرية جديدة، وجادة لتفهم عروض الشعر على أساس الوحدة الزمنية الموسيقية، ويحافظ صاحب النظرية-المستشرق الفرنسي جويار-على معلومات العروضيين العرب وأدواتهم، دون المساس بها، ويقدمها-في الوقت نفسه-في إطار علمي، ومنهجي، جديد يحاول-من خلاله- إدراك الإيقاعات العربية، والكشف عن أصولها. ولعل رؤية موسيقية، كرؤية جويار تهدينا حقاً إلى فهم ما كان يعنيه الخليل، الذي لم يصلنا كتابه الذي ألفه في الموسيقى، وبالتالي إلى فهم علم هو من ألزم علوم اللغة، لعلاقته الوثيقة بفنها الأول: الشعر.
