تُعدّ بوابات المدن والقصور من أهم العناصر المعمارية في بلاد الرافدين بصورة عامة، وفي العواصم الآشورية، بشكل خاص، وقد كشفت التنقيبات الأثرية في العراق عن قدم فن عمارة البوابات للمدن والقصور، فضلاً عن المعابد في آشور من بين أشياء أخرى، تسند نظرية أنها أساساً مصدرها هو بلاد الرافدين. وقد بلغ فن العمارة في بلاد الرافدين قمّته بدءاً من عصر الوركاء مروراً بالعصر الأكدي حتّى وصل ذروته في العصر الآشوري الحديث، وقد كشفت التنقيبات عن بوابات المدن والقصور والتحصينات الدفاعية والأسوار. وقد أولى الملك الآشوري اهتماماً بالغاً ببناء وتصميم البوابات وتزيينها وتحصينها ، ويظهر ذلك جلياً من خلال النصوص الملكية الخاصة بطقوس البناء. تناولت الدراسة بناء بوابات المدن والقصور في أربعة عواصم آشورية (آشور، كالح، دور شروكين، نينوى) ، اختارت الدراسة عدداً من بوابات المدن والقصور المكتشفة، والتي تمثل قمة الفن المعماري، وقد قسمت هذه الدراسة إلى خمسة فصول. تناول الفصل الأول ملخص تاريخ آشور وعواصمها والبوابات لغة واصطلاحاً، والفصل الثاني دراسة بوابات مدينة آشور وقصورها وتحصيناتها الدفاعية. والفصل الثالث عن بوابات المدينة والقصور والتحصينات الدفاعية لمدينة كالح؛ والفصل الرابع لدراسة بوابات المدينة والقصور والتحصينات الدفاعية لمدينة دور شروكين. أما الفصل الخامس؛ فقد تناول بوابات المدينة والقصور والتحصينات الدفاعية لمدينة نينوى. كشفت هذه الدراسة أن عمارة البوابات للمدن والقصور قد تطور - بشكل كبير - خلال الحقب الآشورية حتّى بلغ ذروته في العصر الآشوري الحديث؛ إذ امتزج مع فن النحت المجسم والنحت البارز، واستمر حتّى سقوط الدولة الآشورية الحديثة 612 قبل الميلاد.
