لم يأتِ الفن في بادئ الأمر لغرض الفن في العصور القديمة، وإنما جاء تلبية لمتطلبات أفراد المجتمع وحياتهم اليومية، كما عُدَّ صلة الوصل بينهم، وبمرور الوقت أصبح الفن أداة للتعير عن الأحاسيس والأفكار، وبهذا فقد كان له الوظيفة نفسها التي تؤديها الكتابة منذ زمن بعيد وحتى وقتنا الحاضر، ولما كان الإثنان يمثلان وسيلة إبلاغية لحدثٍ ما فإننا نجزم بوجود ترابط بينهما بشكلٍ أو بآخر.
إذ أن الكتابة كانت في بادئ الظهور تمثل صوراً تُعبر عن أفكار وأفعال أراد الإنسان العراقي القديم تسجيلها، ولكن بمرور الوقت ابتعدت الوسيلتان عن بعضهما البعض، وهذا الإفتراق نتيجة طبيعية لتطور الفكر وهو حال جميع النتاجات البشرية الفكرية والمادية.
كانت الكتابة في العصر الآشوري الحديث (911- 612 ق.م) قد ارتبطت بنوع مميز من أنواع النحت البارز في العراق القديم، فقد برز في هذا العصر نوعٌ من الفنون المميزة التي ما زالت مثار إعجاب الكثيرين، ويتمثل بالمنحوتات الجدارية التي استمدت عناصرها الأساسية من فنون بلاد الرافدين والممتدة إلى عصور قبل التاريخ، إذ جاءت هذه المنحوتات لتكون مرآة تعكس منجزات تلك الدولة العظمة المترامية الأطراف، يدعمها في ذلك تدوين العديد من النصوص المسمارية المتنوعة، فضلاً عن حوليات الملوك المنفذة عليها بشكل مباشر لتكون وسيلة أبلاغية (فنية - كتابية) في الوقت نفسه.
ضمت هذه الدراسة العديد من المحاور الخاصة بالمنحوتات الجدارية في العصر الآشوري ويشكل مركز في عهد السلالة السرجونية، لما لها من أهمية سياسية وفنية ومن خلالها سلطنا الضوء على جانبين مهمين، عُني الاول بالجانب الفني المتعلق بأصل المنحوتات الجدارية وأساليب تنفيذ المشاهد الفنية عليها فضلاً عن المواضيع المنفذة وفق تلك الأساليب، أما الجانب الثاني فقد ركّز على علاقة الكتابة المسمارية المرافقة للعمل الفني أو المستقلة عنه بالمشاهد السردية - القصصية المنفذة على تلك المنحوتات.
