لأن بول تيليش يعيش على التخوم التي هي حد فاصل بين موضوعين وفي الوقت نفسه هي اتصال بينهما فإنه يعيش على تخوم الفلسفة والدين، على تخوم النسبي والمطلق، على تخوم الدين والثقافة، على تخوم الوطن وأرض الغربة فإنه يستهدف أن يصل إلى مركب يجمع بين النقيضين، بين الانفصال والاتصال داخل إطار من التناغم والذي هو عين الحب يخرج الإنسان من تناهيه ليستشرف العظمة الإلهية، وقد جرى تغيير العنوان الأصلي "عند التخوم".
في استهلال بحثي "التحقق الديني" كتبت "إن التخوم أو الحدود هي خير موضع لاكتساب المعرفة"، وعندما طلب مني أن أدلي بدلوى عن الطريقة التي تطورت بها أفكاري انطلاقا من حياتي فكرت أن مفهوم التخم أو الحد قد يكون الرمز الملائم لكل تطوري الشخصي والعقلي، ويكاد في كل موضع أنه كان على أت أقف بين امكانيات بدائلية للوجود، ألا أكون مستقراً تماماً في أي منها وألا اتخذ موقفاً محدداً ضد أي منها أيضاً، ولما كان التفكير يقتضي التقبل للإمكانيات الجديدة، فإن هذا الوضع هو وضع مثمر للفكر، ولكنه وضع صعب وخطر بالنسبة للحياة، والتي تتطلب مراراً وتكراراً قرارات ومتى يكون هناك استبعاد للبدائل، وهذا التصرف وما فيه من توتر حدد كلا من مصيري وعملي.
