يشكل كتاب "رسائل فيوليت: جولة في حياة يهود بغداد" سيرة ومذكرات فيوليت شمّاش (1912 - 2006) والتي دوّنتها بحنين وشوق جارفين إلى عالمها المفقود في العراق الذي اضطرت إلى الفرار منه إلى الهند برفقة زوجها وطفلتيها عقب أحداث الفرهود عام 1941... ارتحلت فيوليت مع الأسرة بعد ذلك للإقامة في كل من فلسطين وقبرص وفلسطين المحتلة قبل أن يستقر المقام في لندن في عام 1964، حيث شرعت في تدوين مذكراتها في ثمانينيات القرن العشرين. يُمكن قراءة "رسائل فيوليت" بأنها سيرة فرد وسيرة وطن وسيرة شعب، تحاول مؤلفتها تفسير وقراءة الماضي وفق لحظة زمنية مغايرة، فهي تكتب كما وكأنها تحاول خلق حاضرها، وتشكيل هويتها الجديدة وبنفس الوقت لا تستطيع التخلي عن هويتها القديمة، فهي مهمومة برصد العام والخاص في حياة عائلتها والبلدان التي عاشت فيها، بما فيها من حروب وويلات ووضعيات ومواقف، سيجد القارئ أنها تعكس تأثير اللحظة التاريخية في حياة صاحبة المذكرات ويهود بغداد في القرن المنصرم، وبما يتناغم مع مصير عائلة وشعب كان ولا يزال معلقّاً بين الحرب والتشرد والاستقرار. والمذكرات تتوجه بها المؤلفة إلى الجيل الجديد من أبنائها وأحفادها لتخبرهم عن أصولهم الحقيقية في بغداد، التي ترى فيها وشعبها الوطن الأم قبل أن تضطر للرحيل. فتقول: "جُلّ ما سأخبركم عنه لم يعد موجوداً، فتلك كانت بغدادي، أرضي الأم التي ترعرعت في حضنها، وبالكاد بقي لها أثر اليوم، كما لو أنها كانت خطوط طباشير أزالتها مُمحاة من على اللوح، استعداداً لكتابة قصة جديدة".
