تعبر الأمثال الشعبية عن تجربة طويلة مر بها المجتمع وعايشها أفراده، وأنتج من رحمها أقوالاً صارت مستودعاً لحكمتهم ورؤيتهم للحياة، وقانوناً يحكم سلوكهم ويقومه إن مال، وقد استخلص أفراد المجتمع من أمثالهم تلك العبرة والقيمة. وتشكل الأمثال الشعبية- أيضاً- أداة مهمة في التنشئة الإجتماعية وعمليات ( الغرس الثقافي) إذ أنها تلقن أفراد المجتمع ما يجب فعله وما لا يجب، وما هي المعايير الأخلاقية التي يجب إتباعها. وتعبر الأمثال الشعبية كذلك عن طريقة تفكير المجتمع، وملامح العقلية الجمعية، وتعكس بمحتواها أسلوب حياة أفراد المجتمع.
وما يجعل الأمثال الشعبية موضوعاً من موضوعات الأنثروبولوجيا عامة والأنثروبولوجيا الثقافية خاصة، هو المضمون الذي تقدمه هذه الأمثال، وهو ما اصطلح على تسميته "بالخطاب الفكري"، وهو مدخل يضع دراسة الأمثال الشعبية ثقافياً ضمن مجال "أنثروبولوجيا الأدب"، وهو ميدان نستطيع من خلال دراسة الإبداعات الشفاهية المأثورة قراءة ودراسة المجتمع، واستخلاص توجهات هذا المجتمع وضيغه المعرفية التي تحكم توازنه. واستهدفت هذه الدراسة عدة أهداف منها: اختبار فرضية أن مجتمعي كلا من منطقة شمال غرب مصر ومنطقة شمال شرق ليبيا تمثلان منطقة ثقافية واحدة، لها سمات ثقافية متماثلة، وعقل جمعي واحد واتجاه فكري متقارب. واستهدفت كذلك دراسة دور الأمثال الشعبية في ترويج بعض القيم الثقافية وترسيخها، ودورها في اختيارات وتوجهات المجتمع وأفراده، مستكشفة السمات العامة لثقافة مجتمعي البحث، ورصد المشترك بينهما.
