لم يعد فى مقدور أمة من أمم عالمنا المعاصر أن تقيم مجتمعا تسوده الحرية والرفاهية ما لم يكن أفراد هذا المجتمع واعين بحقوقهم وواجباتهم، ولم يكن الفقر ولا المرض أساس بلاء مجتمع من المجتمعات النامية وهو الذى يؤدى بدوره إلى الفقر والمرض، فالفقير قد يظل فقيراً بعض الوقت ولكنه يستطيع كسر حاجز الفقر عن طريق استغلال البيئة استغلال أفضل، وذلك إذا ما كان متعلماً راشداً، والمريض يسعى إلى مصادر العلاج الناجحة إذا ما كان عارفا بمسببات المرض وطرق الوقاية وأساليب العلاج، أما الجاهل فإنه لا تتوفر لديه المعرفة للازمة للتغلب على الفقر والمرض.
والدعوة إلى محو الأمية إلى جانب أنها تؤدى إلى تحقيق مجتمع الرفاهية فإنها دعوة أخلاقية فى المقام الأول أساسها إعطاء المواطن الأمى الأدوات اللازمة التى تمكنه من أن يحقق ذاته وأن يستمتع بفرص متكافئه مع غيره ممن أتيحيت لهم فرصه التعليم، والمجتمع المسئول هو الذى يجند طاقاته البشرية والمادية للقضاء على الأمية، والعائد من علاج هذا المرض الخبيث لن تكون فائدته للأمى الذى تمحى أميته فحسب ولكن تعم فائدته المجتمع بأسره.
