لم يعد علم تعليم الكبار متموضعاً في سياق بعض الممارسات التعليمية التعلمية الموجهة للكبار فحسب، كما لم يعد إنفتاحه مقتصراً علي العلوم التربوية والنفسية بكل أنماطها بل غداً متداخلاً مع العلوم الأخرى ومنخرطاً في طبيعة التطورات المنهجية والمعلوماتية التي تطرأ عليها بشكل متسارع خلال الفترة الراهنة.
ولعل من العلوم التي انفتح عليها علم تعليم الكبار، الفلسفة كمنظور ومنهج، وعلم النفس، وعلم الإجتماع، والأنثروبولوجيا، والسياسة، وعلم التاريخ، وغير ذلك من العلوم مكتسباً الإنجازات التي حققتها هذه العلوم وبخاصة بعد بزوغ التحولات الشاملة والعميقة التي بدأت في نهاية القرن العشرين وما زالت تداعياتها مستمرة حتى الآن.
ومن هنا، بات علم تعليم الكبار مجبرا علي إستيعاب المفاتيح التي تقدمها له العلوم الأخرى للإستفادة منها لمواجهة تحديات مجتمعية غير مسبوقة تبدأ بمشكلة الأمية - في الوطن العربي حالياً يوجد (70) مليون أمي من إجمالي عدد (300) مليون مواطن عربي - وإرتفاع معدلات البطالة بين المتعلمين والتي أصبحت بمثابة قنبلة موقوتة تهدد الأمن والإستقرار والتقدم المنشود، مما يتطلب تأهيلهم وتدريبهم وأعدادهم لوظائف وأعمال وممارسات جديدة يحتاج إليها المواطن العربي حتى يتبوأ مكانته المأمولة في الألفية الثالثة، هذا بالإضافة إلى مشكلات أخرى طفت على السطح في الأونة الأخيرة لعل منها مشكلات الأرهاب والتطرف بأشكالها المختلفة، ومشكلة أطفال الشوارع، وتعليم الفتاة وتمكين المرأة، والتسرب من التعليم، وعدم قدرة مؤسسات التعليم النظامي على إستيعاب من هم في سن التعليم، وتقديم برامج تعليمية تتسم بالجودة من حيث الشكل والمضمون، والتوجه نحو خصخصة التعليم العام والجامعي، وغير ذلك من القضايا والمشكلات.
