برزت المرجعية الشيعية سياسياً مع فتوى الميرزا الشيرازي عام 1891 ضد التبغ. وما لبث أن لعب المجتهدون دوراً أخطر في ثورة 1905 الدستورية في إيران. وفي العراق تصدى المجتهدون للاحتلال الإنجليزي وقادوا ثورة 1920 ضده. وبينما نجحت الدولة العراقية في قمع المجتهدين وإعدام بعضهم، ضمن سياسة الحديد والنار العامة التي اتبعتها مع المعارضة، سقط النظام الملكي في إيران عام 1979، لتقوم على أطلاله جمهورية إسلامية بقيادة أحد المجتهدين الشيعة البارزين وهو آية الله الخميني.
