تتحدث الرواية عن الإنسان الهامشي، الإنسان الساعي إلى إعادة صياغة العلاقة مع الله، الإنسان الذي وجد نفسه في واقع جعله يحمل صفة "الأدنى"، يلتقي مع الرب في المنام فيتكلم معه ويطلب منه أن يكون له نبيًّا ، لكن نبيًّا يختلف عن بقية الأنبياء، وتتم الصفقة بشرط أن يسرق عمامة، تبدأ مهمته فيسرق عمامة، لكنها العمامة الخطأ، إنّها عمامة "ظهر الدين"، يتم إلقاء القبض عليه متلبسًا بالسرقة، يتم إرساله إلى مستشفى المجانين بأمر من "ظهر الدين" وهناك تبدأ صفحة جديدة من المهمة حيث يقوم أحد العاملين في المستشفى بمساعدته على الهرب ليخرج حاملاً معه أيامه السبعة الأخيرة من الحياة، يسكن فندقاً خاصاً بالهوامش البشرية، يعيش في غرفة مهملة مع اثنين من المتسولين، رغم المدة القليلة المتبقية له من الحياة إلا أنّه يصر على إكمال المهمة، عند خروجه ليلا لإكمال المهمة يجمعه القدر مع طفل "لقيط" يجده مرمياً أمام الجامع، يقرر أن يكون ذلك الطفل مكملا لنبوته، لكن المفارقة تكون أن الخطأ يتكرر في اليوم السابع ... رسالة الرواية أو ما تريد قوله : نفخ الإنسانية في جسد فهمنا للاديان، في سبيل الوصول إلى إلغاء الانساق التي تقسم البشرية إلى هامش ومتن، وأدنى وأعلى، جميعنا متساوون أمام الرب .
