إبراهيم أحمد العزب شعلان، من مواليد 14 يناير 1934م بمدينة زفتى محافظة الغربية بمصر، حاصل على ليسانس الآداب من قسم اللغة العربية عام 1958م بجامعة القاهرة، كما حصل على ماجستير في الأدب الشعبي عام 1969م بنفس الكلية، ودكتوراه في الأدب الشعبي بمرتبة الشرف الأولى عام 1975م بنفس الكلية.

قبل عصر النهضة .... اقتصرت الحضارة المسجلة على تاريخ "الناس اللى فوق" وتغاضت عن المجتمعات التى تمثل العنصر العام في نمو الحضارات ، ومنذ بداية عصر النهضة بدا الاهتمام "بالناس اللى تحت" ، وأصبحت المشكلة هى كيفية الاقتراب من هؤلاء الناس وكيفية نقل المفاهيم والقناعات من "فوق " إلى "تحت " . والثقافة الشعبية تعد من المداخل الهامة لدراسة الشعوب لأنها تعبر عن الجوانب النفسية والعقيلية في حياة المجتمعات ، وتعد الأمثال الشعبية من أبرز عناصر هذه الثقافة لأنها تمثل حجر الزاوية في معرفة الشعوب.
