طلبت مني مجموعة من الباحثين والباحثات الشباب في المنيا أن أدرّبهم على البحث الاجتماعي العلمي واقترحوا عليّ دراسة ظاهرة استخدام الأمثال الشعبية في محافظة المنيا.
وكانت إحدى النتائج المهمّة هي أنه منذ تلك اللحظة حتى هذا اليوم (أعني أكثر من 25 سنة) بدأت أسجل بطريقة منهجية كل مرة سمعت فيها مثلاَ وأسجل أيضا السياق. ومن ناحية أخرى قمت بتنظيم جلسات تدريبية حول الأمثال بين أكتوبر 2007 ومارس 2008 في إطار الدراسات الحرة في المراكز الثقافية اليسوعية (الجزويت) في الإسكندرية والمنيا وأرمنت، وكنت أطلب من المشتركين أن يسجلوا بشكل عفوي الأمثال التي كانوا يعرفونها. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، قدمت لهم اختبارًا لتحديد مستوى معرفتهم بالأمثال. وأيضاً طلبت من بعض المشتركين الشباب في هذه الجلسات في المنيا والإسكندرية أن يلاحظوا استخدام الأمثال بنفس الطريقة العلمية التي كنت استخدمها في سنة 1993.
أخيراً، في كل مرة أجد فيها كتاباً أو مقالة عن الأمثال المصرية، لم أكن أقرأها باهتمام كبير فحسب، بل قمت بنسخ الأمثال. لذلك كان من الممكن أن أقارن بعضها بعضاً وأكتشف درجة تكرارها وترددها عند مؤلفيها.
ويبين لنا أن العديد من الأمثال لا تُعرف إلا في مناطق معينة. المسح الاجتماعي الذي أجراه الشباب من قرية حجازة (مركز قوص بمحافظة الأقصر) تحت إشراف جمعية الصعيد للمدارس والتنمية يؤكد هذه الحقيقة أن كثيراً من الأمثال الشعبية يختلف من منطقة إلى أخرى.
هذا يعني أنه لا يمكن لأي باحث أن يدّعي معرفة جميع الأمثال المصرية، ولا حتى أنا نفسي مع أني على الكمبيوتر قمت بجمع 6840 من الأمثال المختلفة المأخوذة إما من الكتب المذكورة في كشف الكتب والمصادر وإمامن بحث من الأبحاث الميدانية.
إن الغرض من هذا الكتاب هو تقديم أشهر الأمثال وفقاً للمجالات المختلفة للحياة البشرية. هذه المجالات ستساعدنا على اكتشاف ما هي الاهتمامات الرئيسية للشعب المصري في حياته اليومية.
