يذهب هذا الكتاب إلى دراسة العلاقات الأمريكية الصينية في مدة ما بعد الحرب الباردة وذلك من خلال تحديد طبيعة هذه العلاقة بين السياستين الإقتصادية والسياسية لهاتين الدولتين ومن ثم ضبط وإستنباط هوامش التوافق والتنافس بينهما في هذه المدة.
فقد ظهرت معطيات جديدة لمرحلة ما بعد الحرب الباردة التي بدأت تشهد تلاشي عناصر التحالف الإستراتيجي الغربي بعد إنهيار الإتحاد السوفيتي وتراجع مبررات التحالف الغربي في مواجهة الخطر الشيوعي وظهور مؤشرات تنافس دولي على المصالح الإقليمية الإستراتيجية منها والإقتصادية لتشكل مراكز النفوذ الدولي سياسياً وإقتصادياً.
تعد العلاقات الأمريكية - الصينية من أكثر العلاقات الدولية تعقيداً في النظام الدولي، فكلا الدولتين تتأثران بمعطيات البيئة الدولية وتسعيان إلى تجسيد عناصر قوتهما فيها.
فالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية إلى تكريس نظام القطبية الأحادية وأبعاد القوى الدولية الصاعدة عن تغيير شكل هذا النظام، في حين أن الصين تسعى إلى إعادة رسم وتغيير النظام الدولي؛ إما على الصعيد الإقتصادي فإن الولايات المتحدة تسعى إلى تأسيس علاقات إقتصادية مع الصين لصيرورة القوة الإستراتيجية الأمريكية وتشكل رهاناً إقتصادياً وإستراتيجياً مهماً لما توفره من سوق تجاري وإقتصادي إستهلاكي وإستثماري.
